“Power has to be given an instrument of permanent, exhaustive, omnipresent surveillance, capable of making all visible.. It has to be like a faceless gaze..” Michel Foucault.
Urban space has become a generalized Panopticon, It’s habitants can been described by the words that Foucault uses for the inmates of Panopticon, although the physical absence of Bentham’s structure. The inmates isolated one from another are forced to a state of conscious and permanent visibility that assures the automatic functioning of power.
OJOS Installation is meant for public space and especially places of transition. Numerous videos representing eyes are projected next to the transition place. These faceless gazes observe the passengers , wathcing their movements as long as they move in the visual field of the eyes.
The eyes consciously remind the passerby the everyday surveillance imposed on her/him unconsciously and involuntary by CCTV, security networks, mass media, centers exercising power.
Installation consists of a narrow passageway where sensors are placed. Sensors detect passenger’s position and according to this information a computer processes the image projected next to the passerby.
